Therapy for Children & Teenagers
As a fully qualified teacher with over 10 year’s experience, I believe that children are totally suited to Cognitive Hypnotherapy and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming). They respond rapidly to therapy which has been tailored to meet their mental and emotional needs.
The doorway between the conscious and the unconscious mind is the imagination. For children, it's relatively easy to reach at the deepest levels, in a much quicker time than required by a good many adults. Stories, adventures, visualization, imaginative games, role-playing work effectively with children. This is why amazing results can be achieved very quickly. Perception of negative memories can be changed simply and easily.
Much that goes on in our world can cause problems for children, just as it does for adults. Rapid physical growth over short periods of time, and concerns about changes in their bodies can cause stress and loss of self-esteem. Various problems in school, with studies, teachers or peers, can cause problems. There are many fears that can plague children: fear of the potential danger in our schools today, fear of the dark, fear of going to sleep, fear of doctors, dentists and needles, etc. Many children experience the embarrassment of habits they find hard to break, like bed-wetting or thumb sucking. A new baby or other addition to the family can cause undue stress. Loss of their own bedroom space due to a new addition to the family, or having to move to a smaller place can make children unhappy. With extensive media coverage it's difficult to keep such news away from a child's hearing these days.
In school, common problems for many children are the loss of a friend who moves away, being shamed or frightened by a teacher or principal, the death or serious illness of a school peer or teacher, boredom with school and having to make new friends. Exam nerves, unfamiliarity with school work and falling behind in a subject can all cause excessive stress. Looming stage performances may cause unwanted feelings of insecurity and anxiety. The insistence upon “correct” performance in front of others in a classroom can be extremely hard on any child but especially a shy child. Threats or bullying by other children, and the general fear and pressure of drugs in many schools, are serious concerns and add tremendous stress for certain children. There are those children who can cope with these situations and there are some who need a little extra help. For these children Cognitive Hypnotherapy holds some very smart answers.
Why Children Might Come to a Cognitive Hypnotherapist and Master NLP Practitioner?
In short, for issues for which hypnotic methods and NLP techniques are a helpful response. Some of these include:
- Completing homework more effectively,
- Performing better in the classroom,
- Getting to school and liking it
- Thumb sucking
- Bedwetting,
- Nightmares and fear of the dark
- Confidence building
- Dealing with divorce or death in a family
- illness - their own or someone in the family
And many other problems......
Children are frequently brought to Cognitive Hypnotherapists to improving academic performance e.g. reading, writing, memory, getting homework done and coping with stress associated with SAT’s levels. Other areas including dealing with peer pressure friendships, self-esteem and even wanting to be in school are effectively and easily handled, for the most part, by one or two NLP or Hypnosis change sessions.
Consultation Sessions
At the Ethical Minds Hypnotherapy Clinic in Cheltenham, I work with children and teenagers from 7 – 17 years of age. However, there are exceptions to this age range depending on the individual child and his or her developmental needs. In accordance with the National Council of Hypnotherapy Code of Ethics, a parent or guardian accompanies all children aged 16 or under. Sessions are very informal and are designed to help the children relax whilst their problems are addressed. Naturally, the subtle techniques used, reflect the age of the child. The consultations end with a relaxation session during which the learning’s from the session are gently and positively reinforced by bespoke hypnotic suggestion. These are very safe and gentle and are formed by listening to and working with the child’s own language patterns in the way they relate to their world. So if you’re expecting me to swing a watch in front of your child, sorry I won’t, you’ve come to the wrong place.
